Tulane Defeats Southern Miss, 70-61
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Tulane came to Reed Green Coliseum this evening and defeated Southern Miss, 70-61, shooting 56.1 percent from the floor, while holding the Golden Eagles to a 34.0 field goal percentage.
The Green Wave?s Brandon Brown poured in 20 points off six-for-nine field goal attempts and a perfect eight-for-eight free throws, gaining the game-high in scoring.
Brad Richardson scored 16 to lead the Golden Eagles, and Elvin Mims added 15 points off the bench. Mario Myles finished with 13 points to complete USM?s double-figure scorers.
Waitari Marsh collected 11 points, and Brandon Spann finished with 10 points for the Green Wave.
Tulane (10-5 overall, 2-2 in C-USA) never trailed in the second half, building a 14-point lead, 49-35, at 10:09. Southern Miss (6-8, 1-3) made a late attempt, going on a 17-6 run to pull within three, 52-55, at 2:47.
Shots did not fall sufficiently down the stretch for the Golden Eagles, who made only two field goals in the final two minutes. Tulane added to its advantage, building a double-digit lead, 68-56, with 33 seconds on the clock.
Mims sparked a 7-0 run when he initially came off the bench to give the Golden Eagles an early 11-7 lead at 15:35 in the first half. The Green Wave countered with a 15-8 run to claim the lead, 22-19, at 8:02.
Southern Miss? shooting went cold near the end of the first period, scoring at 6:44 to pull within two, 22-24, of Tulane, but didn?t sink another shot until 1:45 of the opening half. The Green Wave took a 34-26 lead into halftime.
The Golden Eagles return to action at home this Friday, Jan. 18, when Memphis comes to Hattiesburg. The game will be televised on ESPN, with an 8 p.m. tip-off. The Tigers beat Southern Miss earlier this season with a 75-53 win in Memphis.
