Mims Is Back After Serving Suspension
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss starting forward Elvin Mims has been reinstated to the Golden Eagle basketball squad by Head Coach James Green and will be available to play when UAB visits Green Coliseum for a 1 p.m., Saturday game.
Mims was suspended indefinitely following the Auburn game, and did not play in either the Memphis or the South Florida game. He was suspended for an on-court violation of team rules.
"I have apologized to the coaching staff and to the team," said Mims. "I have been accepted back as a member of the team. I'm glad to be back; I think I've learned from this mistake, and I look forward to being a part of the team again, and getting on with the basketball season and playing the game that I love.
"I would like to put this episode behind me, and concentrate on the game and academics."
"We obviously are happy to have Elvin back with us," said Green. "He's an important part of our program. He has done what he needed to do to return to this program and the team, and I would hope that he is allowed to put his mistake behind him, and return to being a student athlete and an important, contributing member of our Golden Eagle team and family."
Prior to his suspension, Mims was leading the team in scoring at 18.1 points a game, and was among the C-USA scoring leaders as well. He also was leading the team in rebounding at 6.9 rebounds a game, and had played in all 10 games prior to the suspension, starting nine.
Last season as a junior, Mims played in 30 of 31 games and started six. He averaged 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds a game.
