Golden Eagles Defeat Cajuns, 35-10
LAFAYETTE, La. - Tim Blackwell, a converted wide receiver, rushed for 78 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, leading Southern Mississippi to a 35-10 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.
Blackwell handled the bulk of the running game for the Golden Eagles (2-0) after gaining just 25 yards in his first appearance at the position two weeks ago against Oklahoma State.
Blackwell opened the scoring on a 16-yard run, then added a pair of one-yard TDs, helping Southern Mississippi build a 24-7 lead early in the third quarter.
Jeff Kelly overcame four sacks to complete 17-of-29 for 243 yards and a touchdown. The Rajin' Cajuns also sacked backup Zac White twice.
Kelly capped the scoring with a one-yard TD toss to Bobby Garner with 10:26 remaining in the contest.
After the Goldem Eagles jumped to a 17-0 lead, UL-Lafayette got its only touchdown on Jerome Coleman's 42-yard run with 7:15 to go in the first half.
Southern Miss held the Rajin Cajuns to only 144 total yards, including just seven on the ground.
John Van Cleave, who completed just 10-of-39 for 137 yards for UL-Lafayette, threw three interceptions and was sacked four times.
Southern Miss has won six straight over UL-Lafayette to increase its lead in the all-time series to 37-11-1.
