Southern Miss Football Travels to Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday
A long break after the Oklahoma State game has built up the Golden Eagles? anticipation, so Southern Miss (1-0) is more than ready to take on Louisiana-Lafayette (1-1) at Cajun Field (31,000) in Lafayette, La., on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m.
The game will not be televised, but Internet broadcasts are available by accessing SouthernMiss.com and clicking on live radio broadcast of games on the athletics home page. John Cox ? play-by-play, Vic Purvis ? analysis and Lance Pittman ? sideline will handle the broadcast duties for Southern Miss ISP Network.
The Southern Miss-Alabama game was scheduled to be played last Saturday. However, due to the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., the game was postponed. Plans are in the process for determining an alternate date for the game to be played.
Southern Miss leads the all-time series with the Ragin? Cajuns, 36-11-1. The Golden Eagles collected a shutout in the last matchup, with the Golden Eagles defeating Louisiana-Lafayette, 48-0, in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Nov. 13, 1999.
Jeff Kelly leads the Golden Eagles offense after his 277 passing yards on 22-of-35 attempts against Oklahoma State. Dawayne Woods is the leading rusher, carrying the ball 25 times for 70 yards. Kelly threw for a touchdown, and Woods ran for a score against the Cowboys.
Seven receivers made catches in the opener with Kenneth Johnson making the most, coming down with seven receptions for 92 yards. LeRoy Handy followed with six catches for 82 yards.
The Southern Miss offense didn?t have any turnovers in the 17-9 victory over OSU, on Sept. 2, while the defense recovered four fumbles. Alex Ray collected two of those Cowboy miscues
Joe Henley is the leading tackler with 10 total stops. Rod Davis, Chad Williams and Roy Magee share second place with six each. Terrell Paul ended the opening game with 2.5 sacks, as the Golden Eagles recorded four sacks and eight tackles for loss.
The Cajuns opened their season with a 20-0 shutout over Nicholls State, and then fell to Minnesota 44-14. Ten starters return to ULL?s defense including Kyries Hebert, who holds a team-best 22 tackles and one fumble recovery, and Marrious Berry, who claims 20 tackles and three tackles for loss.
Sophomore quarterback Jon Van Cleave leads a youthful Cajun offense. He will look to improve on his 48.3 (30-for-62) completion percentage. He is averaging 152.5 passing yards a game.
Jerome Coleman is the leading rusher with 33 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Dugas is the leading receiver with nine catches for 68 yards. Marcus Wilridge holds the best average per catch with eight receptions for 146 yards (18.2 ypc).
