Southern Miss Travels Saturday to Birmingham to take on Alabama
Southern Miss (1-0) looks to improve on its successful opening of the season this weekend, as the Golden Eagles take on Alabama (1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Legion Field, in Birmingham, Ala. The game will be televised on espn2, with a kickoff time of 4:45 p.m.
Jeff Kelly leads the Golden Eagles offense with his 277 passing yards on 22-of-35 attempts against Oklahoma State. Dawayne Woods is the leading rusher, carrying the ball 25 times for 70 yards. Kelly has thrown for a touchdown, and Woods ran for a score against the Cowboys.
Seven receivers made catches in the opener with Kenneth Johnson, making the most, coming down with seven receptions for 92 yards. LeRoy Handy follows with six catches for 82 yards. As a true freshman, Chris Johnson has the team?s only receiving touchdown, a 20-yard pass play from Kelly.
The Southern Miss offense committed no turnovers in the 17-9 victory over OSU, while the defense recovered four fumbles. Alex Ray collected two of those Cowboy fumbles.
Joe Henley is the leading tackler with 10 total stops. Rod Davis, Chad Williams and Roy Magee share second place with six each. Terrell Paul ended the opening game with 2.5 sacks, as the Golden Eagles recorded four sacks and eight tackles for loss.
Southern Miss will look to have similar success as last year?s game against the Crimson Tide. The Golden Eagles pulled off a stunning 21-0 upset and collected their first win against Alabama since 1990 when Southern Miss won in Birmingham, Ala., 27-24.
Alabama opened the season with a 20-17 loss to UCLA. The Crimson Tide did collect a 12-9 win over Vanderbilt last Saturday.
Quarterback Tyler Watts has completed 22-of-39 passes for 332 yards with one touchdown. He has also rushed 26 times for 85 yards. Ahmaad Galloway is the Crimson Tide?s leading rusher with 220 yards on 45 carries. Alabama has yet to collect a rushing touchdown.
Antonio Carter is Alabama?s leading receiver with nine catches for 134 yards and one touchdown. Freddie Milons and Triandos Lake have five receptions each, though Milons has 134 receiving yards, and Luke has 60 yards.
Milons is one of the top kick returners in the country with six returns for 183 yards, an average of 30.5 yards a return, and a long return of 50 yards. Carter has one return for 50 yards.
Brooks Daniels holds a team-best 18 tackles. Saleem Rasheed and Reggie Myles claim 15 tackles each. Rasheed leads the team in pass breakups with two.
