It's Game Week at Southern Miss
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi football squad showed positive effects of a two-day break during a two-hour-plus Sunday afternoon workout as game-week preparations started for Head Coach Jeff Bower and his Golden Eagle squad for their Sept. 1 season-opener from The Rock at M. M. Roberts Stadium.
"Our intensity was better today", Bower said. "But it's game week, the players have had a couple of days off, and I think they're excited about playing, and they'll be even more excited toward the end of the week. We've got a lot of work still to do, but this is where it really gets to be fun. You put in all the hard work throughout the offseason, the two-a-days, and then you get the opportunity to play a game in less than a week. That's exciting.
"We spent much of Sunday's workout rehearsing the kicking game before moving on to offensive and defensive situations, but it was primarily a kicking-game workout, a situational practice where we try to cover everything that can happen in a game."
Bower also looks for Oklahoma State to bring a complete package to Hattiesburg. "I think they're going to be good," he said. "They have 15 starters back, with a lot of talent on the team, and there's no doubt there's going to be a different attitude with a new coaching staff. There'll be a lot of excitement, and they'll come in here as a very confident team. The game will be a challenge for us."
The Eagles have just four workouts remaining before that Oklahoma State game that will feature an 11 a.m., kickoff and will be televised by ESPN. Tickets are still available by going by the ticket office in the Ferlise Center on the Southern Miss campus, or by calling 601-266-5418.
