Eagles Start Adding Game Package For Cowboys
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss spent time during today's workout correcting mistakes from Saturday's scrimmage, but also started adding some of the Golden Eagles' game-package for the Sept. 1 season opener against Oklahoma State, a game that's now less than two weeks away.
"We did start sprinkling in some Oklahoma State stuff today, giving an introduction of them, and looking at some of their schemes," said Head Coach Jeff Bower. "We also spent time polishing and reviewing our entire offense and defense. We haven't started cutting things down yet, but did start looking toward that first game."
Bower also said the review of the tape from Saturday's scrimmage indicated that his early assessment of the workout was on target. "We thought on Saturday that it was a good effort and that, for the most part, we played well," he said. "The tape proved that to be true. We really didn't have any depth chart changes that came as a result of the scrimmage and that's an indication that everyone played well. I think we wore down some late in the scrimmage, and that's why we have to use this week as a heavy conditioning week."
Sophomore linebacker Rod Davis hurt an ankle in the Saturday scrimmage, and Bower is unsure how long he will be out. "It just depends on him," said Bower. "It's normal to have these kinds of injuries at this time of the year, but we've got to get everyone well. It really hurts your preparation when you have people missing, and we don't have much time left to get ready."
The Eagles are scheduled to continue work Tuesday through Thursday, take a long weekend to let players get their legs back and then spend next week polishing for the opener. That game is set for an 11 a.m., kickoff and will be televised by ESPN.
