Two-a-Days End On Friday
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss got in its next-to-last day of two-a-day workouts on Thursday as the Golden Eagles continue to prepare for a Sept. 1 season-opener at home against Oklahoma State.
"We finished up today's workout really strong," Bower said. "I thought we had great team periods against each other, we had good competition, the effort was good, and it was a good way to finish the practice.
"We cut back the morning session some, did some extra tape work, but I thought that overall we had a really good day of practice."
The coaches watched the tape from Wednesday's scrimmage, and Bower said there were no personnel moves following that scrimmage, but injuries are a source of concern. "We've just got too many guys out right now," he said. We've got to get some guys healed up and ready for the Saturday scrimmage. We really need all the work we can get. We haven't had enough hot weather either. We normally don't condition during two-a-days, but we've had to this year because of the lack of consistent heat. We've had some good humidity, but just not enough of it."
Defensive lineman Carlos Crusoe (Columbus, Miss.), who suffered a broken foot in the Wednesday scrimmage, underwent surgery Wednesday night, and, as expected, will be lost for the season.
The Eagles will end two-a-days with Friday's workouts and then hold their second major scrimmage of the fall period, Saturday morning, in M. M. Roberts Stadium. Players and coaches will attend a rules clinic with conference officials prior to the scrimmage.
Following the scrimmage, players start class on Monday and the workout schedule reverts to one practice a day.
