Golden Eagles' Sekul Named To HOF
Hattiesburg, Miss. - George Sekul, who quarterbacked The University of Southern Mississippi to a National Small College championship, is a member of the 2002 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame class that was announced recently at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson, Miss.
The 2002 class is the 40th Anniversary Class for the 41-year-old organization. The eight-member class also is the largest induction class in the Hall's history. The number was increased from the normal six in recognition of the 40th Anniversary Class and will revert to six next year.
In addition to Sekul, this year's class included Moss Point, Miss., native, and Jackson State football standout Verlon Biggs (deceased); T. B. Ellis (deceased), Jr., better known as the father of Jackson State athletics, who was a coach and athletic director at J-State for over three decades; Glynn Griffing, an outstanding football player at Ole Miss; Carolyn Henry, a well-known state tennis player from Crystal Springs, Miss.; Samye Johnson, a Mendenhall, Miss., native, who becomes the first MSHOF inductee in the sport of volleyball; Earl Leggett, who played at Hinds Community College, LSU and in the NFL; and, Ole Miss tight end Ralph Smith.
Sekul began his career at Biloxi (Miss.) High School, played at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and then led Southern Miss to a 17-3 record in two seasons (1957-58). That record included a 9-0, 1958 mark that earned Head Coach Thad (Pie) Vann and his team the UPI College Division National Championship.
Sekul also is well known for his coaching exploits, including at Gulf Coast CC, where his teams were perennial contenders for state titles and national rankings.
Induction ceremonies for the 2002 class will take place April 12, 2002, with location, time, and ticket details to be announced at a later date.
