Southern Miss Baseball Signs Pitcher/Outfielder
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer announced the signing of Brian Hurley, a 6-0, 180-pound pitcher and outfielder from Spring, Texas, to a national letter of intent for the 2001-02 school year.
?Brian will make an immediate impact with our program,? Palmer said. ?He throws with velocity and has a good breaking pitch. He is very mature for a high school player. We feel very fortunate to get a player of this caliber at this late stage in the recruiting period. Brian is a fine athlete, and our staff believes he will have a chance to help our pitching staff and also play in the outfield.?
The signing of Hurley increases the number of signees to 12 for the Golden Eagles, finishing the recruiting process for the 2001-02 school year.
The righthander graduated from Klein High School in Houston, Texas, where he helped Klein gain the 1999 and 2001 district championship titles.
He was a first-team all-district performer and was named team most valuable player in 2001. Hurley chose the Golden Eagles over Tulane, Southwest Texas State and Houston, all three NCAA Tournament participants, and also UNLV.
Hurley posted a 13-2 record last season with a 1.72 ERA. He pitched 112.2 innings and recorded 109 strikeouts, while only yielding 33 walks. He also produced a .339 batting average with seven home runs and 26 runs batted in. He was also named to the all-tournament team this past season.
Hurley played four years with the Houston Wildcat select team. During his time with the Wildcats, he contributed to the squad?s honors, which include winning the Texas Willie Mays State Championship and an appearance in the AABC World Series.
