Martin Named Academic All-District
DENTON, Texas - Southern Miss softball player Kristie Martin was selected to the 2001 Verizon Academic All-District Women's Softball Team for District VI. The junior third baseman earned a 3.70 GPA in Architecture Engineering Techology.
Martin is batting .302 with 20 runs and a .381 on-base percentage. Defensively, she is second on the team in assists with 81, while claiming a .966 fielding percentage.
The Clinton, Miss., native is one of five infielders named to the all-district squad. Melissa Briggs of New Mexico State, Miranda Knight of Louisiana Tech, Brandi McGuire of Tulsa and Tiffany Wooley of Arkansas round out the infield.
Pitchers Amanda Kirk of Texas Arlington and Lindsay Price of Ole Miss, catcher Ryan Stukel of Baylor and outfielders Monica Briggs of Texas San Antonio, Jamie Cummings of Ole Miss and Naomi Fitzgerald of Baylor complete the selected squad.
All of these student-athletes will represent District VI on the Verizon Academic All-America national ballot. District VI is comprised of schools from the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must be a starter or front line reserve and must have at least a 3.20 overall grade point average. Members of the College Sports Information Directors of America from District VI select the team.
The Verizon Academic All-America Team for softball will be announced Thursday, June 7.
Heather Bell was also two-for-three with a double. South Florida was led by Shelly Riker, Cindy Turek and Ginny Georgantas who each batted one-for-two.
