Men's Basketball Notches Win Over Tulane
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP)- Vandarel Jones scored 22 points and Mel Cauthen had 18 as Southern Mississippi defeated Tulane 78-63 on Saturday.
The victory will put the Golden Eagles in a second place tie in the Conference USA with the loser of Sunday's matchup between South Florida and Memphis.
Southern Mississippi (19-7, 8-5) led by as many as 17 points in the first 20 minutes of the game, but the Green Wave (9-18, 2-12) battled back to within four at the half.
Tulane was unable to maintain its momentum after the break.
David Wall had 16 for Southern Mississippi. Ledaryl Billingsley led Tulane with 20.
Southern Miss shot .500 from the floor, .467 from the three-point line, and .694 from free-throw mark while Tulane shot .420 on field goals, .400 on three-pointers, and
.682 on free throws.
Mario Myles pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Billingsley led all rebounders with nine.
Tulane beat Southern Miss 80-69 earlier in the season in the New Orleans Arena.
