HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Coming off an 80-69 loss earlier in the week at Tulane and a disappointing 71-59 Green Coliseum loss to UAB
Feb. 3, the Eagles try to get back in the win column against a Cincinnati team that has been "the" team to beat in the early years of
Conference USA.
The game starts at 3 p. m., and will be televised on ESPN Plus as part of Conference USA’s package. Bill Hazen will handle play-by-play
duties and longtime Saint Louis coach Charlie Spoonhour will provide color commentary.
Thanks to seven straight victories over the Golden Eagles, Cincinnati leads the series with Southern Miss by a narrow 13-12 margin.
Cincinnati won last year’s game, in Cincinnati, Ohio, 95-69 when Kenyon Martin hit 13 of 19 field goals and scored a game-high 33 points.
David Wall was one of two Golden Eagles in double figures with 20 points. The Eagles hit just 24 of 54 (.444) field goals and lost the
rebounding battle 48-26. That loss snapped a three-game Golden Eagle win streak.
Cincinnati goes into the game having never lost to a National Division team. The Bearcats are 20-0 against the other division in regular
season play, in addition to a pair of victories over National Division opponents in conference tournament play.
Southern Miss led 34-32 in New Orleans, La., earlier in the week but saw the Green Wave use deadly free throw shooting late in the
second half to outscore the Eagles 48-35 and take a 12-point victory in the new New Orleans Arena. With the loss, the Eagles fell to 16-6
overall and 6-4 in league play.
Cincinnati comes in with a 15-7 record, a 5-4 mark in the American Division. The Bearcats are fresh off a 91-70 win over DePaul Feb. 3.
Guard Steve Logan lead the Bearcats in scoring at 16.4 points a game. Fellow guard Kenny Satterfield is close behind at 13.9 points a
game.
Following today’s game, the Eagles go on the road for a two-game swing to Houston (Feb. 14) and Saint Louis (Feb. 17) and then return
home for the final three games of the season, against Tulane (Feb. 24), Memphis (Feb. 8) and South Florida (Mar. 3). The 2001 OCG
C-USA Tournament is scheduled for Louisville, Ky., Mar. 7-10.
