Southern Miss travels to Memphis on Saturday
Southern Miss (3-0/1-0 in C-USA) faces Memphis (2-2/0-1 in C-USA) on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium (62,380) in Memphis, Tenn., at 7 p.m., central time. This game is not televised, but an Internet broadcast is available by accessing SouthernMiss.com and clicking on live radio broadcast of the game on the athletics home page.
This will be the 52nd meeting between the two schools. After defeating the Tigers 24-3 last season in Hattiesburg, the Golden Eagles have won the last seven meetings and 19 of the past 22 contests.
Coming off a 3-0 victory against UAB, Southern Miss will look for more scoring production from its offense this Saturday. Quarterback Jeff Kelly, who finished with less than 200 yards passing against the Blazers, will look to get back on track against the Tigers.
On the year, the redshirt senior has completed 51-of-89 passes for 638 yards. He has thrown for two touchdowns and only one interception on the season.
Tim Blackwell collected a career-best 97 yards on 24 carries against UAB. The true sophomore leads the team with 200 yards on 54 carries. His three rushing touchdowns on the year make him USM?s scoring leader.
LeRoy Handy is tied with Kenny Johnson for the team lead with 12 catches each. Handy leads with 214 receiving yards on the season for an average of 17.8 yards a catch.
Rod Davis is the season leader in tackles for Southern Miss with 17 unassisted and six assisted stops. Davis claims one tackle for loss, a pass deflection and a fumble recovery.
Greg Brooks collected two interceptions against UAB and now hails as the Eagles? leader of swipes. Terrell Paul leads the team leader in sacks (3.5), and Roy Magee ranks on top with seven tackles for loss.
Memphis quarterback Travis Anglin, who has not thrown a pass interception in his last 90 attempts, leads the Tigers, who are coming off a 38-21 loss to Louisville last Saturday. On the year he has thrown for 372 yards on 41-of-58 pass attempts. He also claims three touchdown passes.
Dante Brown rushed for a career-high 158 yards and one touchdown in the Tigers? win over Tennessee-Chattanooga and had 119 yards and a score against Louisville. He leads the team in rushing with 399 yards on 64 carries and has scored three touchdowns.
Bunkie Perkins is the top Tiger receiver with 15 catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman wideout Darron White had his best outing as a Tiger in the Louisville contest with six passes for 75 yards and his first career touchdown.
Glenn Sumter leads the defense with 25 solo tackles and nine assisted tackles. He also has one tackle for loss, an interception, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery. Tony Brown holds the sack title with three on the year.
