Cross Country Gets First Victory of the Season
Southern Miss, who placed four runners in the top 10, was able to edge out host South Alabama, 36-38. Florida A&M was third with 74 points followed by University of Mobile with 93 and Spring Hill College with 109.
Southern Miss' Jessica Crump finished second overall, behind USA's Wendy Davis, and covered the 4000-meter course in 19:54.77. Keri White was right on her heels and finished third with a time of 20:00.19. The other Lady Eagle finishes included Oby Amadi, who finished 6th, with a time of 20:37.46 followed by Kendra Doyle, eighth, with a time of 20:59.41, Tomeka Shaffer was 17th with a time of 23:04.15, Jenny Combs, 23rd, at 24:14.85, and Lena Gates, 30th, 26:32.13.
"The times were slow today because the course was slow," head cross country coach Dena Dunn-Reif said. "The weather was nice but the course was flat, but very sandy, almost like running in quick sand. I thought the team ran strong. We past some other runners down the stretch and that helped us to beat South Alabama."
Southern Miss will have an open weekend before hosting their annual Southern Miss Invitational, Oct. 6, at the B. O. Van Hook Golf Course Pavilion side.
