About The Program
Southern Miss Athletics provides internship opportunities to students at The University of Southern Mississippi who have a passion for working in intercollegiate athletics. Internship experiences expose students to the field of sports administration through event operations, marketing and promotions, athletics communications, athletic administration, and more. Students benefit by gaining practical, first-hand understanding of an NCAA intercollegiate athletics program by working side by side, and in cooperation with, experienced administrators and coaches. The most successful students are energetic, have a passion for sports and want to be engaged in a fast-paced learning environment. The duration of the internship is August - May.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be either an undergraduate or graduate student who is enrolled full-time at The University of Southern Mississippi.
- Interns must be committed to stay the entire academic year.
- Be willing to dedicate 5-10 hours per week to Southern Miss Athletics.
- Possess a serious desire to work in intercollegiate athletics and/or the sports industry.

AREAS OF INTEREST/DEPARTMENTS
Athletic Academic Services gives student-athletes the tools and resources to achieve success inside and outside the classroom. This department provides comprehensive academic support, counseling, guidance, and programming to all student-athletes while promoting self-responsibility, personal growth, and academic development.
Learning objectives for the Athletic Academic Services Intern include, but are not limited to:
- Learn and apply NCAA eligibility requirements for student-athletes
- Gain understanding of University policies and procedures for Athletics
- Gain on-the-job training and firsthand experience mentoring a diverse population student-athletes
- Improve communication skills with all levels of administrators
The Sports Information and Communications unit is liaison between athletics and the public. This unit facilitates interviews, release information, and much more for the general public and local, regional and national media outlets for coaches and student athletes.
Learning objectives for the Sports Information Intern include, but are not limited to:
- Improve multitasking and time management skills by managing multiple projects and deadlines
- Increase ability to creatively think of story feature ideas to promote student-athletes and coaches in media
- Gain journalistic writing ability
- Develop strong oral communication skills when dealing with media, coaches and student-athletes
