HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss head football coach Will Hall met with members of the media on Friday morning following practice to discuss next Tuesday's Sun Belt Conference matchup with Southern Alabama.
This game time is set for Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on ESPN2 as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield.
Here is some of what Hall said to the media on Friday:
Opening Statement:
"It was a good day, a normal Tuesday for us. We treated it more like a Wednesday really, because we've had a few extra days. It was good weather and it got a little cooler. We got a lot of good work in and we scaled down practice a little bit because it's later in the year, which is what we normally do. We're just rocking and rolling and trying to solve problems, fix issues, keep growing and developing. Overall, it was a good day and I'm looking forward to this week."
On offensive line changes last week:
"They played really well. I know it didn't appear that they played well because we didn't score a lot of points and move the ball, but we blocked people and just didn't make plays with our skill kids last week and our skill kids know that. I've said that after watching the tape our skill kids have played well all year. We just didn't break a lot of tackles and didn't make a lot of people miss. We got tackled by the first guy a lot and that's something our skill kids are taking to heart and hopefully, that won't happen again this week."
On utilizing extra days from bye week:
"We're honing in on improving. We're addressing issues constantly. Outside of the young tight ends jumping offsides, our mistakes have been different each week. We solve problems and something new comes along that hasn't really shown and we've got to get it all fixed. We're that team that we're not good enough yet to overcome things, so mistakes kind of shine, because you're never going to play a perfect game. Even Georgia doesn't play a perfect game, but they're good enough to overcome it. We made some plays last week, and we've got to continue to clean some things up and address issues, and that's what we're doing daily."
On South Alabama:
"[They are] are good football team. They really try to stop the run and do a good job of playing physical on defense. Their linebackers are extremely physical. Their d-line are all fourth, fifth and sixth year guys that have been there forever and they are strong, tough, and good. Caullin Lacy is a great player at receiver. I've got a lot of respect for Carter Bradley. He made two plays and it was the difference in a one-score game last year. I've got a lot of respect for them and it's going to be a physical matchup for sure."
On South Alabama's offense:
"Their offensive coordinator has been there for three years. Major Applewhite does a great job. They want to run the football and they want to be balanced, and they want to attack, similar to us. They want to be able to do both. They do a lot of shifting in motion to try to get your eyes where they are not supposed to be, so we've got to be really disciplined with our eyes."
On playing on a Tuesday night:
"Now that we're on our normal schedule, it just kind of gets where today is like a Tuesday to us, so once you get on that rhythm and you're in this arena, that's just kind of what it is. It was good to get a few extra days to heal up, and now we're on our schedule and Tuesday night will be like Saturday night to us. We won't even notice the difference really."
On injuries:
"We're in the middle of the year and we're beat up and banged up like a lot of people are. There are no excuses-we've got to play."
