BATON ROUGE, La. – Beach Volleyball picks up its first win of the season in the final day of the Tiger Beach Challenge.
"I think it would be easy to walk away frustrated on the weekend," said head coach Shawn Taylor. "If anything, we proved we are fully capable. Assistant coach Hannah Masoner pointed out that we were 1-4 on the weekend but 4 to 5 points away from being 4-1 instead."
After a hard-fought first day – and weekend – of play in Baton Rouge, the Golden Eagles split two matches against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and Texas A&M – Kingsville, losing 2-3 and winning 4-1, respectively.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 3, Southern Miss 2
Southern Miss started the day off with a showdown at high noon against the Islanders. The Black & Gold picked up wins on courts two and five. The second pairing of Vanessa Hurnikova and Aleksandra Chudzik took set one 21-16 and held off the pair of Islanders in the second, 24-22.
The pair of Valeria Siakidou Papakyriakou and Kai Norman took court five by storm, winning 21-17 in both sets to seal the victory. The two set victories would be the Golden Eagles only wins of the match, falling in straight sets to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on the other three courts.
At the first pairing, Breleigh Favre and Kellie Garraway fell 21-17, 21-14 as did No. 3 pairing Hallie Phelan and Olivia Hepworth, 21-15, 21-15. The Islanders took the decisive set on court four against Taylor Pierce and Reagan Sandlin.
Southern Miss 4, Texas A&M – Kingsville 1
After a brief rest, Southern Miss hit the sands again against Texas A&M – Kingsville in the final match of the day. The Javelinas entered the day winless at the Tiger Beach Challenge. The Golden Eagles quickly secured the match after four sets, winning on courts two, three and five.
The No. 2 pair of Hurnikova/Chudzik picked up their second set victory of the day, winning 21-14 and 21-18. Phelan/Hepworth rebounded from their loss on court three to win 21-19, 21-16. Siakidou/Norman also notched their second win of the day, going 21-16, 21-17.
In the only loss of the day, No. 4 pair Beck/Miller fell 21-13, 21-16. Rounding out play, Favre/Garraway rallied to pick up the fourth set victory of the match in the three sets, 17-21, 22-20, 15-8.
"We're happy to finally be rewarded with a win," said Coach Taylor. "It was a long weekend and the girls had to dig down to get that last one vs Kingsville."
