This Weekend’s Series: Southern Miss returns home this weekend against Louisiana-Lafayette to start a stretch of 10 of the next 12 games at Pete Taylor Park. The Golden Eagles open this part of the schedule with Louisiana-Lafayette, who comes to Hattiesburg for its first three-game weekend set since Feb. 21-22, 2014.
The Last Time Meeting the Cajuns: Cole Donaldson’s two-out double off the wall just right of center field capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning that lifted Southern Miss to a 7-6 victory on April 23, 2019. It also marked the second consecutive season that Southern Miss had downed the Ragin’ Cajuns in Hattiesburg with a ninth-inning rally, taking a 9-8 walk-off win on April 3, 2018.
The Only NCAA Meeting: The two teams have met once in the postseason, during the 1990 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional with the Golden Eagles taking a 14-10 win and staving off elimination in the event. Kerry Valrie hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as the Golden Eagles scored 12 unanswered runs over the final three innings. Marc Kubicki threw the final three innings and limited the Cajuns to no runs on no hits with no walks and four strikeouts to get the victory.
Louisiana-Lafayette: The Ragin’ Cajuns enter the weekend with a 9-5 record after falling 4-0 to Mississippi State in Starkville Wednesday night. The Cajuns, under second year coach Matt Deggs who has posted a 16-14 record, have swept Rice three games, beaten Tulane two of three in New Orleans and defeated Louisiana Tech this season.

Back to the NCAAs in 2019: Southern Miss appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-straight year and the 16th time overall, playing in the Baton Rouge Regional to complete its 2019 season. The Golden Eagles made their first-ever appearance in the postseason in 1990, with a trip to Baton Rouge, and at one point, reached regional play nine-straight seasons, from 2003-11.
Golden Eagles Take C-USA Title: Southern Miss captured the last Conference USA tournament title in 2019 and have won three of the last four events - making the championship game in all four seasons. The Golden Eagles also captured the 2018 C-USA regular season and tournament titles, marking the second time Southern Miss had won both C-USA championships in the same season with the other time coming in 2003. Four of the school’s five C-USA regular season titles have come under current head coach Scott Berry, while he has also led Southern Miss to four of their five tournament titles.
