Hattiesburg, Miss. -- University of Southern Mississippi Director of Athletics, Jon Gilbert, announced today the appointment of Jeff Mitchell as Deputy Athletics Director.
Since 2006, Mitchell has served as a member of the senior management team at Santa Clara University in California, most recently as Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations. He served as the interim Executive Director of Athletics at Santa Clara in 2015.
"Jeff is a proven administrator and will be a great addition to the Southern Miss athletics staff," Gilbert said. "He brings a wealth of experience to a critical position within our Department. I am confident he will have an immediate impact as we continue our journey To the Top."
From 2006-2014, Mitchell oversaw various Santa Clara Athletics Department units including compliance, academic support, and student services. For the past four years, Mitchell has managed the day-to-day operations of the department with a directed focus on external operations and revenue generation. Mitchell was the department's chief financial officer, chief revenue officer, and primary legal liaison to the office of the general counsel. He led the department to four consecutive years of record financial growth with year-over-year increases in operating budgets and in revenue generation. Throughout his time with the Broncos, Mitchell served as the sport administrator for the men's basketball and baseball programs.
In his new role at Southern Miss, Mitchell will assist Gilbert with oversight of all day-to-day operations of the athletics department and will provide guidance for the compliance, academic support, and sport performance units. In addition, Mitchell will serve as the department's chief legal liaison to the office of the general counsel and sport administrator for the Golden Eagles' football and men's basketball programs.

A native of Mississippi, Mitchell grew up in Magnolia. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Millsaps College in 2001 and was a four-year member of the Majors' baseball team. He also earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Millsaps College in 2003, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Law in December of 2005. Prior to his tenure at Santa Clara, Mitchell served as the Director of Media Relations at Millsaps College (2001-2003) and as a graduate assistant in the media relations office at Ole Miss (2003-2005). Additionally, Mitchell is the co-author of a textbook entitled Sport, Ethics and Leadership which was published July 2017.
He is married to April Slayden Mitchell and is the father of two children, Harper Wynne and Carson.
