HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After missing two games due to injury, Jack Abraham returned to the starting lineup last weekend against Louisiana Tech.
At wide receiver.
That's right, the Golden Eagles used both Abraham and ture freshman Tate Whatley, who started the game under center. While the start was a trick package from the Golden Eagles, the pair of quarterbacks still combined for 226 passing yards.
While it was Whatley who started the game behind the center, it was Abraham who played there for most of the game. The sophomore from Oxford hit on 24-of-29 passes for 195 yards, which included a 49-yard, second-quarter touchdown pass to Neil McLaurin.
With that performance, Abraham now leads the country in completion percentage (73.3) and ranks third in catches per game (26.13).
Still, Whatley got some time under center – after starting the last two weeks since Abraham went down with an injury in the final quarter at Charlotte – and threw a key 28-yard pass to Quez Watkins that set up the fourth-quarter, game-winning touchdown. The final drive consumed 7 minutes, 31 seconds which accounted for the second-longest scoring drive of the season for the Golden Eagles.
Whatley finished the contest by completing both pass attempts for 31 yards and rushing for 15 on seven carries.
Third-ye
ar coach Jay Hopson has liked the way the two quarterbacks played together last Saturday.
"They complimented each other really well," said Hopson. "Jack had some good throws, but still has to secure the ball. He and Tate did a good job. Tate had a nice big throw to Quez in the fourth quarter and did a good job. They're a good one-two punch."
The duo will get a chance to help the Golden Eagles try to become bowl eligible for the fourth-straight year and 22nd time over the last 25 seasons when they meet UTEP, Saturday, in the regular-season finale.
The game from El Paso starts at 2 p.m. CT/1 p.m. MT and can be viewed on ESPN+, as well as be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network from Sun Bowl Stadium.
