HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss hits the road Saturday to play Charlotte in a key Conference USA contest as the Golden Eagles continue to vie for West division title.
Game time is set for 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET at Jerry Richardson Stadium in Charlotte, as the Golden Eagles (3-3 overall, 2-1 C-USA) go after their second consecutive victory. The game can be seen on ESPN3 as well as heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two schools as the Golden Eagles hold a 2-1 series advantage, including a 66-21 victory at The Rock last season. Saturday's contest also marks just the second time Southern Miss has played at Charlotte, winning 44-10 during the 2015 campaign in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
"Charlotte is a good football team," said Southern Miss fooball coach Jay Hopson earlier this week. "Again, I'm a worn out record, another good football team. They are a team that plays hard on both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively.
The Golden Eagles have been led offensively in 2018 by the duo of quarterback Jack Abraham and wide receiver Quez Watkins.
Abraham has thrown for 1,850 yards and 13 touchdowns, along with only seven interceptions. He ranks second in the league in passing yards per game (308.3) and third in passing efficiency at 154.1. As for Watkins, he continues to lead the conference in receptions per game at 6.8 as he has notched 498 receiving yards on 41 catches and seven touchdown catches.
Freshman running back Trivenskey Mosley has also begun making a name for himself as he had a breakout game last week against UTSA in which he tallied a career-best 142 yards on the ground.
Defensively, graduate senior Picasso Nelson, Jr., leads the Golden Eagles with 32 tackles, while Sherrod Ruff and Jacques Turner pace the Nasty Bunch with three sacks each.
For Charlotte, Evan Shireffs has been starting for Chris Evans, who was injured earlier this season and has passed for 327 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in three games played. Benny LeMay boasts the top rushing marks for the 49ers (3-4, 2-2) with 664 yards and six touchdowns.
On defense, Jeff Gemmell leads the way with 49 tackles, including 4.0 or loss and 1.5 sacks.
The Golden Eagles, the five-time champion of C-USA, looks to win its first league West division crown since 2015 this fall.
