OXFORD, Miss. - Three Southern Miss track and field athletes registered career-best marks at the Mississippi Open on Saturday at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex.
Tori Bowie led the Golden Eagles with a first-place finish in the 100 meters, recording a career-best time of 11.38. Her previous best was 11.72 and her first outdoor victory in the event. Bowie then recorded a second-place finish in the long jump.
Cara Wells recorded a career best mark in the hammer with a throw of 50.63m (166-1), finishing second to go with a fourth-place in the discus with a mark of 43.60m (143-0). Petra Visic was third in the hammer with a throw of 50.58m (165-11).
Ganna Demydova recorded a first-place win in the triple jump as she competed in her first outdoor meet of the season. Demydova posted a mark of 13.35m (43-9.75). Ke'Airra Jones and Tamarra Bowie finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with marks of 12.35m (40-6.25) and 12.11m (39-8.75).
Rachel Polk claimed a second-place in the discus with a throw of 48.46m (159-0).
Marcus Norwood was one of three Golden Eagles placing in the top eight in the high jump. Norwood was second with a jump of 2.03m (6-8) while Courtland Wells was sixth with a jump of 1.98m (6-6) and Matt Blank was eighth with a mark of 1.88m (6-2).
Richard Collingwood posted a career-best and school record mark in the discus with a throw of 52.47m (172-2) and placed second. Suyi Georgewill was fourth with a season-best throw of 50.25m (164-10). Robert Collingwood recorded a throw of 17.04m (55-11) for second-place. Richard was fifth with a throw of 16.02m (52-6.75). Georgewill also finished fourth in the hammer with a throw of 54.48m (179-1).
The teams will travel to the LSU Alumni Gold on April 21.
