Golden Eagle Track & Field Teams Compete in Season-Opener

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss track and field teams opened the 2012 outdoor season at home and posted six first-place finishes on the day.
Highlighting the women's team performance was sophomore Rachel Polk who collected two first-place finishes in the discus and shot with throws of 49.77 (163-3) and 13.59 (44-7), respectively. The discus throw was a personal and school-record performance, besting the old record by 9'8". Teammate Cara Wells finished second in the discus with a throw of 43.60m (143-0).
Courtland Wells was the top finisher in the high jump with a mark of 2.08m (6-9.75) with Marcus Norwood placing third with a jump of 2.03m (6-8) and Matt Bland was fifth with a jump of 1.87m (6-1.50).
Jonathan Ruffin placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 13.73m (45-00.50). In the men's hammer throw, Suyi Georgewill posted a throw of 59.16m (194-1) for first while Napoleon Benoit was fifth at 50.36m (165-3).
Richard Collingwood placed second in the discus with a throw of 48.38m (168-6) with Georgewill placing fifth with a throw of 45.06m (147-10).
Mario Spann placed third in the long jump with a jump of 6.78m (22-3).
Petra Visic had a throw of 48.38m (158-9) in the hammer good enough for third and Wells was fourth with a throw of 47.76m (156-8) which was a personal-best.
Spann, Justin Sims, Jordan Crump and Randy McCoy ran the best time in the 4x100m relay with a time of 41.58.
Julien Bousquet ran a time of 3:57.34 in the 1,500m for second place and Dale Dunn was eighth with a time of 4:07.55. Dunn also finished fifth in the 400m with a time of 49.86.
Jamie White ran a time of 12.25 in the 100m for second-place and Brianna Rayfield finished fifth with a time of 12.41.
Southern Miss returns to action when the Golden Eagles travel to Alabama Relays on March 23-24 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
