Track and Field Teams Finish Strong in the Classroom

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss track and field and cross country teams finished the 2009-10 academic year on a high note, posting the highest grade point averages in recent years and led by the cross country team with a 3.61 cumulative average. They were followed by the women's track and field team with a 3.0 gpa and the men's team a 2.74 gpa.
Five members of the cross country squad finished the semester by accumulating a 3.5 grade point average or better including three members of the team earning President's List honors (4.0 GPA) and two earning AD Honor Roll honors (3.0 GPA or better). Four women's track and field athletes earned President's List honors, one Dean's List honor and seven had AD Honor Roll honors.
Women's team members of cross country and track and field Stephanie Ledgerwood (Yuma, Ariz.), Jocelyn Lockhart (Brunswick, Canada), Krista Moylan (Palos Park, Ill.) and Petra Visic (Split, Croatia) garnered President's List honors, while Cara Wells (Little Rock, Ark.) collected Dean's List accolades.
Jessica Cheeks (Laurel, Miss.), Jolisa Evans (Helena, Ark.), Samantha Leslie (Hattiesburg, Miss.), Ashley May (Birmingham, Ala.), Kara Moylan (Palos Park, Ill.), Chastity Riggien (Montgomery, Ala.), Kelley Rooney (Fair Oaks, Calif.), Kimberley Walker (Gulfport, Miss.) and Dominique Washington (Gulfport, Miss.), all tallied AD Honor Roll nods by achieving a 3.0 GPA or better.
On the men's side, John Caleb Grenn (Hattiesburg, Miss.) topped the squad by earning President's List honors followed by Richard Collingwood (Port of Spain, Trinidad) with Dean's List honors. Julien Bousquet (Montauban, France), Robert Collingwood (Port of Spain, Trinidad), Suyi Georgewill (Ontario, Canada) and Kyle Smith (Daphne, Ala.) registered AD Honor Roll accolades after posting a 3.0 GPA or better.
In the past three years, the track and field GPAs have continued to improve and there has been an increase in student-athletes on the honor roll.
