May, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., finished 20th in the triple jump with a jump of 41-2.50 (12.56m) and Williams, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, finished 22nd with a throw of 173-7 (52.91m).
May was ranked ninth in the nation in the event at the end of the regular season. She recorded a mark of 38-10.50 (11.85m) in her first attempt, but fouled on her second attempt. She improved her mark on her third attempt.
Although May did not advance to the finals, this was her second trip to the NCAA Championships in the triple jump. May claimed the 2010 triple jump title at the Conference USA Championships last month. May also was a national qualifier in the long jump in 2008.
Williams did not record a foul on any of her three attempts. Her best throw was her third attempt, but fell short of the finals as the top nine advanced and received three more attempts.
Williams finished second at the C-USA Championships and advanced to the national meet after placing eighth at the East Preliminary Round. Williams concluded her career as the school record holder in the hammer throw (195-0); indoor shot put (45-03.75) and the weight throw (56-03.75).
With two days remaining at the NCAA Championships, Southern Miss has one athlete left in the competition. Sophomore Tori Bowie, who finished first at the East Preliminary Round, will be competing in the long jump event Saturday at 9:30 a.m. PST.
