Track Closes Home Schedule With Golden Eagle Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss hosted its final home track meet of the season under the threat of inclement weather, Saturday, at the Mashall L. Bell Track and Field Complex.
The Golden Eagle runners and field athletes won 16 of the 35 events. Former Southern Miss alumni also competed in races where they posted top times.
Southern Miss' Stephanie Ledgerwood put on quite possibly the most dominating performance of the day in the Women's 5000 Meter Run with a time of 18:54.85. In victory, Ledger lapped all her competitors at least once and was nearly two minutes better than Tulane's Maggie Gentry who ran a 20:30.44 for second place.
Chastity Riggien also took first place in both the Women's 100 and 200 Meter Dash. She ran a time of 12.02 in the 100 and 24.10 in the 200. Kirsten Richards took the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 57.94 while Zuna Portillo was victorious in the 800 with a time of 2:16.43.
Keeping with the trend, the Southern Miss team of Brianna Rayfield, Riggien, Ashley May, and Portillo won the Women's 4x100 with a time of 45.43.
In the field events, Ke'Airra Jones won the Women's High Jump with a height of 1.75m while Tori Bowie was best among the long jumpers with a distance of 6.12m.
In the Women's Triple Jump, May posted the best distance at 13.10m while Suesanna Williams did the same in Women's Shot Put (13.70m). Williams also brought back victory for the black and gold with a throw of 58.28m in the hammer throw. Cara Wells edged Danielle Martin of Louisiana State in the Discus with a throw of 39.98m.
For the men, Julien Bousquet was best among the 800-meter runners with a time of 1:53.43.
In the Men's High Jump, Southern Miss' Myroen Sartin topped all competitors with a 1.83m jump while dual-sport athlete Francisco Llanos was victorious in the long jump with a distance of 7.04m. Robert Collingwood also placed his name among the day's winners with a throw of 16.15m in the Men's Shot Put.
The Southern Miss Men's and Women's Track and Field teams will now prepare for the Ole Miss Invitational on May 1 in Oxford, Miss.
