Last Time Out: South Alabama scored all its runs in the opening inning in blanking Southern Miss 4-0 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park. The visitors jumped out in front quickly in the first off starter Gabe Shepard who gave up four runs - which included a three-run homer - in a third of an inning. Nine subsequent pitchers then limited the visitors to three more hits and combined to retire 16 in a row at one point, until they allowed a two-out double in the ninth.Southern Miss pitching also combined to fan 12 South Alabama hitters and walked just three. The Golden Eagles registered three-straight singles to open the third, but could not capitalize for their really only scoring chance of the night.
The Team Continues Hot Streak: The Golden Eagles have opened the month of April by winning seven of eight games, having won 17 of their last 22 games dating back to a 6-0 victory at Jacksonville State (March 6). The triumph also marked coach Scott Berry’s 400th career win at Southern Miss.
The Bulldogs: Louisiana Tech heads into the weekend having posted a 24-7 record and a C-USA West leading 10-2 mark. The Bulldogs, which are nationally ranked, are as high as No. 13 by both PerfectGame.org and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. LA Tech also holds a No. 14 ranking by D1Baseball, a No. 16 by Baseball America and a No. 22 showing by Collegiate Baseball. The Bulldogs are coached by Lane Burroughs, a former Southern Miss assistant coach from 1999-2007 under Golden Eagle legend Corky Palmer.
Familiar Faces in the Dugouts: While Burroughs was an assistant for Southern Miss, two current Southern Miss assistants worked for Burroughs at LA Tech, including Christian Ostrander (2016-17) and Travis Creel (2017-19). Creel returned to his alma mater in 2020, having lettered for the Golden Eagles from 2010-13. Southern Miss assistant coach Nick Ammirati was an assistant coach under Burroughs at Northwestern State for two years and Burroughs signed Ammirati at Mississippi State when he was an assistant coach there.
Last Time Against LA Tech: The Bulldogs defeated the Golden Eagles 3 games to 1 in Hattiesburg last month in the first meeting between the two clubs this season. LA Tech captured a pair of one-run games in the series - the first one-run setbacks of the year for the Golden Eagles - as well as a 4-0 shutout. The Golden Eagles hit five home runs in their only victory of the set - a 14-6 triumph in the opening game of the doubleheader on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles also captured the 2018 C-USA regular season and tournament titles, marking the second time Southern Miss had won both C-USA championships in the same season with the other time coming in 2003. Four of the school’s five C-USA regular season titles have come under current head coach Scott Berry, while he has also led Southern Miss to four of their five tournament titles.
