This Weekend Series: Southern Miss looks to snap a current two-game losing streak when they return to action this weekend with a three-game set at Jacksonville State. This will be the first meeting between the two schools during the regular season, although both of the previous games in the series were played in the NCAA postseason in the state of Alabama. Please note that Saturday’s game has moved up two hours and will now start at 4 p.m., due to expected cold weather that evening.
Against the Gamecocks: The Golden Eagles have outscored JSU 25-8 in two previous meetings, coming in the 2006 and 2010 NCAA Regionals.

Recap of last meeting: Southern Miss scored in seven of nine innings and Collin Cargill threw the final 7 2/3 innings as the Golden Eagles defeated JSU in the Auburn Regional 19-6. B.A. Vollmuth, Adam Doleac and Taylor Walker all homered in the contest as Vollmuth has three hits and 5 RBI, while Doleac had two hits and drove in four.
Jacksonville State: JSU enters the weekend with a 4-4 record, after dropping a midweek contest to Samford 10-9. The Gamecocks held a 9-1 lead in that contest by lost to a late Samford rally JSU also swept Valparaiso last weekend at home. The Gamecocks are under 20th-year head coach Jim Case, who enters the weekend with a 597-476 record at the school
Pitching Strong Over First Eight Games: The Golden Eagle pitching staff registered double-digit strikeouts in each of the first six games, having the streak snapped in the final contest of the UCONN series when they only tallied nine. This season, Southern Miss has collected 96 strikeouts as a staff with only 17 walks for a 5.65-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. After Wednesday’s games, the Golden Eagles ranked seventh in the NCAA statistics in strikeout to walk ratio and their strikeouts over nine innings ranked No. 10 at 12.7. Hunter Stanley is tied for No. 2 in the country in strikeouts and ranks first in strikeout to walk ratio at 22.0.
In March Under Berry: The Golden Eagles have posted a 117-67 record (.636) under Scott Berry in the month of March. Southern Miss has not had a losing month during his tenure and enjoyed a 7-0 start during the 2016 campaign. Southern Miss has posted winning streak of five or better in five different seasons under Berry. The longest of nine came in 2017, while the squad had an eight-gamer during the month in 2019 and a seven-game streak in both the 2011 and 2018 campaigns.
Back to the NCAAs in 2019: Southern Miss appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-straight year and the 16th time overall, playing in the Baton Rouge Regional to complete its 2019 season. The Golden Eagles made their first-ever appearance in the postseason in 1990, with a trip to Baton Rouge, and at one point, reached regional play nine-straight seasons, from 2003-11.
Golden Eagles Take C-USA Title: Southern Miss captured the last Conference USA tournament title in 2019 and have won three of the last four events - making the championship game in all four seasons. The Golden Eagles also captured the 2018 C-USA regular season and tournament titles, marking the second time Southern Miss had won both C-USA championships in the same season with the other time coming in 2003. Four of the school’s five C-USA regular season titles have come under current head coach Scott Berry, while he has also led Southern Miss to four of their five tournament titles.
