Over the Weekend: Southern Miss registered its first three-game series sweep this year as the Golden Eagles outscored Louisiana-Lafayette 20-7 in the set. The pitching staff colleted 36 strikeouts and walked just two - one intentional - over the three-game set. Christopher Sargent highlighted an eight-run, second inning in the opener with a grand slam. It was one of three homers in the frame as Reece Ewing and DJ Lynch also went deep in the stanza en route to a 13-4 win. After scoring a run in the opening inning which held up on Saturday for a 1-0 victory, Reed Trimble hit an 11th-inning, walk-off grand slam in the finale as the Golden Eagles swept the Cajuns for the first time in Hattiesburg since Feb. 16-18, 2001. It was the first walk-off grand slam for the Golden Eagles since Jeff Cook won a 17-15 game against Louisiana Tech on March 1, 2003.
The Last Time against the Jaguars: An eighth-inning rally proved not enough to overcome an early four-run deficit as Southern Miss fell to South Alabama 5-3 at Eddie Stanky Field on Feb 23. Down 4-0 with one out in the eighth, Southern Miss pinch hitter Billy Garrity walked and Dustin Dickerson reached on a fielding error by the Jaguar third baseman before Gabe Montenegro drew a base on balls to load the bases. Reed Trimble followed with a liner to right, but a nice catch by Hunter Donaldson robbed him of a hit and all he could manage was a sacrifice fly to score the visitors’ first run. Chris Sargent followed with a run-scoring single, before pinch hitter Michael Wein doubled down the leftfield line to drive in another run to cut the margin to 4-3. That was all the runs Southern Miss managed as Slade Wilks fanned to end the frame. It was solid starting pitching that kept the Golden Eagles off the board over the first seven innings. Jeremy Lee limited Southern Miss to just three hits over his starting stint, fanning eight and walking none in the victory. His only trouble came in the fourth. Trimble connected with a one-out double off the centerfield before Sargent followed with a single to put runners at the corners but the Golden Eagles could not capitalize.
Tonight’s Pitcher: Sophomore left-hander Drew Boyd gets his third start of the year as the Golden Eagles play the first of four midweek games left on the schedule in 2021. Boyd is 1-1 this season with a 2.89 ERA. He has fanned 11 and walked one over 9 1/3 innings. Here is a look at his two starts this season:

South Alabama: South Alabama started its season by going 7-8 after dropping two of three games at home to Jacksonville State last weekend. The Jaguars finished last season’s abbreviated campaign with an 8-10 record. USA is under the helm of 11th-year head coach Mark Calvi, who has posted a 284-219 record for the Jags.

The Golden Eagles made their first-ever appearance in the postseason in 1990, with a trip to Baton Rouge, and at one point, reached regional play nine-straight seasons, from 2003-11.
Golden Eagles Take C-USA Title: Southern Miss captured the last Conference USA tournament title in 2019 and have won three of the last four events - making the championship game in all four seasons. The Golden Eagles also captured the 2018 C-USA regular season and tournament titles, marking the second time Southern Miss had won both C-USA championships in the same season with the other time coming in 2003. Four of the school’s five C-USA regular season titles have come under current head coach Scott Berry, while he has also led Southern Miss to four of their five tournament titles.
