HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Incoming track and field signee Kyle Smith (Daphne, Ala.) has been selected as the Gatorade Alabama Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year by RISE Magazine. Now in its third decade of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, Gatorade joined with RISE Magazine to name the thrower from Daphne High School as its 2007-08 Alabama Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Smith won the javelin event at the Class 6A state meet with an effort of 223 feet, 8 inches, the best prep throw in the nation this spring at the time of his selection and an Alabama state record. The Baldwin County Track Championship Co-Most Valuable Player, Smith also captured first place in the decathlon at the state meet with a total of 5,771 points.
